Real Valladolid, a pioneer in the use of NFC technology for stadium access
  • The club worked with LALIGA to bring this system to the Estadio José Zorrilla, where it will make passing through the turnstiles quicker and reduce queuing times for all fans.
  • Supporters can still use physical tickets if they wish, but many like the extra security that comes from having their ticket safe and secure in a device such as a mobile phone or smart watch.

Real Valladolid have embraced NFC technology at the club’s Estadio José Zorilla, with the aim of speeding up the process for fans as they pass through the turnstiles on matchdays. The club worked with LALIGA to install this pioneering system, which uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to allow visitors to gain access to the stadium via a simple tap of the device containing their ticket. This doesn’t only mean mobile phones, as other devices, such as smart watches, can also become a ticket.

Although physical tickets can still be used by those who prefer that option, many fans are embracing the NFC technology as they appreciate the benefits. For example, this system means supporters don’t need to worry about the risks of losing a physical ticket.

This new way of accessing the stadium is something that the LALIGA HYPERMOTION club has been working on for some time. There was already a trial of the system last season and it has been consolidated this term.

Explaining how Real Valladolid came to embrace NFC technology, David Espinar, Advisor and Director to the President’s Office, stated: “We took part in the first access tests with this system and, in collaboration with LALIGA, almost a year ago we offered our season ticket holders the option of entering the stadium using this technology, as part of the pilot tests ahead of the general roll-out to the rest of clubs. When we were informed of the possibility of using the stadium as a starting point for the implementation of the system, the club worked with LALIGA to adapt the access points.”

Not only does the system provide extra ease and security for the fans using it, but it also helps to reduce queues at the gates in general, which is an advantage for all supporters who attend the LALIGA HYPERMOTION matches at the venue.

The director continued: “With this system, access is much faster and it prevents bottle-necks, while it’s easier for both those working there and the ticket holders. It greatly reduces the time it takes to get through, even as it coexists with the more traditional means of entry, physical cards or BIDI codes, although the trend is moving towards replacing replace them, improving accessibility to the stand and security.”

This contributes to an enhanced fan experience, which is one of the main objectives for the club. On this, Espinar concluded: “With this technology, we reduce the waiting time at the turnstiles significantly and, therefore, make the fan experience more pleasant. The operation also becomes simpler, so the efficiency of the processes is positively affected. All these aspects keep the club motivated to find the best ways to improve the experience for our visitors.”
