A new scholarship programme provides young Spanish footballers the opportunity to study in top universities of the USA, helping them to earn sporting scholarships and continue their athletic careers with broader academic qualifications that also provide potential futures outside of football.
The project, for which LaLiga has collaborated with Santander Bank and AGM, a provider of training for sports professionals, will be repeated every season, selecting one player from each of the 42 clubs playing in LaLiga Santander and LaLiga 1|2|3 to take part.
The primary objective is for players to obtain a scholarship in the US, allowing them to continue their football careers. By attending the course the players, aged between 16 and 22, will also be able to create greater opportunities for their future, whether or not they remain in football long-term.
During their stay, each player will receive personalised consultancy to help them obtain a sports scholarship from one of the main American universities, alongside preparation courses for both SAT examinations and TOEFL language tests.
For clubs competing in LaLiga Santander and LaLiga 1|2|3 the project represents an opportunity to create a new offering for their players, helping in their academic development and providing additional safeguards for their professional lives. For young footballers in Spain it is a chance to open a new world of possibilities for whatever the future may bring.
The first selected players for LaLiga ProPlayer will depart for the US in June.
