CA Osasuna team up with Brazilian company Moss with the aim of becoming a leader in Europe for environmental sustainability
  • The Navarre club and the leading climate technology company have signed an agreement through which they’ll offset the carbon footprint of the club’s administrative and sporting activities in 2023, while they’ll also take steps to reduce and offset the footprint and impact in 2024.
  • CA Osasuna aim to establish a carbon neutral footprint and become a reference in European football in the field of environmental sustainability.

CA Osasuna is a club which constantly aspires to give back to society. The latest example has been seen with the fact that the club reached an innovative sponsorship agreement with the Brazilian climate company Moss, in order to reduce and offset its carbon footprint. Through this alliance, the club from Navarre will look to meet its sustainability objectives. Moss is a company that is well known in the sector for its commitment to the conservation of the Amazon in Brazil and it is one of the leading providers of carbon credit services worldwide.

As part of the agreement between CA Osasuna and Moss, the climate company will become an official sponsor, called the ‘Global Sustainability Partner’, and the aim is for the club to reduce and offset its carbon footprint during the year of 2024, as well as compensating for 2023. The project consists of measuring the greenhouse gas emissions generated by all the club’s sporting and administrative activities at its facilities, including El Sadar and the Tajonar sporting complex, which will be renovated in the near future following the purchase of some land adjacent to the facilities. Furthermore, the emissions from the first team’s bus and plane journeys and the club’s water consumption will also be counted.

It’s worth noting that carbon credits is an international instrument that allows companies and countries to compensate for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions which are more difficult to eliminate. This is done by investing in projects that reduce greenhouse gases, such as tree conservation, reforestation or CO2 capture.

An alliance with a global impact

CA Osasuna, through this historic collaboration agreement, hope to become a leader on the continent when it comes to sustainability and achieving a neutral carbon footprint. They hope to stand out ahead of other sporting institutions and to anticipate future climate regulations. In addition, the Spanish club will offer supporters and sponsors the chance to buy carbon credits to offset the footprints emitted at their own homes and businesses, all with the objective of raising awareness about sustainable habits among the fanbase, and Pamplona and Navarre as a whole.

CA Osasuna are delighted to have reached this historic agreement. The club declared: “We are one of the first clubs in Spain to commit to neutralising carbon emissions. This means that all greenhouse gas emissions generated by the club’s activities will be offset by Moss through conservation carbon credits in the Brazilian Amazon. This makes us very proud because we know that this partnership has a great global impact.”

Those at the club have it clear that they should work in partnership with other sections of society in order to make a better world. The club stated: “Throughout our history we have always been a club that looks for ways to help the community on and off the pitch. We have measured our carbon footprint, meaning the environmental impact we have, since 2020, and we are looking for ways to offset it and become a carbon neutral club. This alliance with Moss meets all of our expectations, as we have partnered with a company that shares our values and that will help us achieve great goals, mainly to help the environment.”

Raising awareness and developing understanding among members of society

CA Osasuna hope to make a clear and relevant impact on society. On this, the club said: “If this development helps other clubs to follow our example, so much the better. As football clubs we need to be aware of the positive impact we can have on society. By participating in such actions, we are opening the door for our fans to get involved too, so that the measures we take have an even greater impact.”

There is positivity in general about the club’s work on sustainability. The club explained: “In April 2023, we modified our electricity contract with Grupo Enhol, a company from Navarre dedicated to renewable energy and which is certified with Guarantee of Origin (GoO). Why did we make this change? It was to allow a substantial reduction in our carbon footprint in terms of electricity consumption, as the energy will come exclusively from renewable sources. Our goal for 2024 is to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 50% compared to 2022. On a day-to-day basis, when purchasing IT equipment (PCs, monitors, printers, etc.), we aim for high energy efficiency. In our stadium and office areas, we have presence and light detectors and temperature control. We know there is still a long way to go, but these measures are helping us to take steps in the right direction.”

As part of the partnership with Moss, there will be promotion of events which raise awareness of environmental sustainability and, in turn, of carbon footprint reduction and offsetting. At the same time, club sponsor Grupo Enhol will offer CA Osasuna members a 20% discount on the market price of its ON510 service, an electricity supplier providing energy that comes mainly from renewables. “Actions like these are what allow our fans to get involved and to participate in these efforts to improve the environment,” the club concluded.
