LaLiga consolidates its position as a key actor in technology and innovation
  • For the second year running, the EQA has evaluated 100% of the projects presented and certified them as technological innovations.
  • This entails not just the recognition of LaLiga's technological efforts, but also a significant tax deduction which its clubs will benefit from.

LaLiga continues to build on its track record in technology and innovation, managing to have 100% of its R&D+i projects officially certified by one of the main bodies. This entails not just the recognition of its technological efforts by the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, but also a significant tax deduction which LaLiga's clubs will ultimately benefit from.

European Quality Assurance (EQA), a certification body accredited by ENAC (National Accreditation Entity), has granted Technological Innovation Certificates to all of the projects presented by the association for the second consecutive year.

Deductions have been recorded amounting to €1,417,190, increasing on the €1,405,028 of last season. These deductions lead to savings by applying them to Corporation Tax and allowing for the continued development of R&D+i projects next season.

The projects include antipiracy tools and software, BI & Analytics, a range of corporate management software, OTT, data analysis, and hotel and catering industry applications – eight major technological innovation projects in a wide range of areas and with a host of applications have been recognised on this occasion through the awarding of Technological Innovation Certificates, with an investment of almost €12 million.

"One of LaLiga's biggest commitments in recent years has been to technological innovation. We have invested significant capital in developing in-house tools that allow us to operate in the market with maximum efficiency and improve the experience for the public. We're proud of this recognition, because it certifies that we have become an important actor in this sector," explained Javier Tebas, the president of LaLiga.

Data analysis, antipiracy and OTT: the tip of the R&D+i spear

The R&D+i certificates recognise LaLiga's commitment to technology and innovation with the development of state-of-the-art tools, with this development having intensified since 2017 with the creation of the Business Intelligence and Analytics department. Last season it had grown to include over 70 staff.

One of the key projects among those certified in this sphere is the LaLigaSportsTV OTT platform, which currently has 1.8 million registered users, over 500,000 followers on social media, more than 120,000 monthly active users and has broadcast more than 40 different sports.

Another of LaLiga's star projects undergoing continuous development is the Mediacoach data analysis system, one of the most sophisticated in the sector, capable of capturing more than 25 images per second and tracking thousands of data points per player. Another of the certificates recognises the work on smart exploitation of data: automated image detection, Tyche 3.0 (anti-match-fixing tool), player ratings, computer data platforms and analytical cubes.

The certificates also cover the state-of-the-art technological tools resulting from the work of the internal anti-piracy research and development laboratory, which previously won the SportsPro OTT Anti-Piracy Award in 2019 and 2020. The key tools in this sphere are the Blackhole, Lumière, Neko, Sentry, Vento and Pasteur software packages.
